In addition to providing precision data leading to accurate determination of the coefficient of expansion, this apparatus illustrates and gives the students experience in practical applications of the spherometer, as a measuring tool.
The apparatus consists of a steam jacket (brass pipe) 50cm long and ~.5cm dia with inlet and outlet tubes for steam and opening for a thermometer, fitted with spherometer. The spherometer reads up to O.Olmm. The exact setting at which it contacts the rod may be indicated by using an electric contacting circuit, such as a dry cell or buzzer. Supplied complete with 3 test rods.
