These variable transformers enable continuously variable A.C. Voltage to be obtained from normal A.C. Mains. The output is variable from 0 to 270 V from a nominal mains input of 240 V (i.e. Giving maximum output voltage 15% above the input supply). Contact between the winding and load is through a carbon brush which covers at least one turn of wire at all times. The area of winding swept by the brush is plated with a precious metal which eliminates oxidations and ensures a long working life with negligible maintenance.
